Australia One of the World’s Top Countries to be an Immigrant

A new global study finds that Australia is one of the world’s best countries to be an immigrant.

Ranking company US News compiles a Best Countries list and measures factors such as economic stability, income equality and job markets.

Australia ranked in 5th position in the world’s best countries to be an immigrant. Switzerland took the top place, followed by Canada, Japan and Germany, and then Australia.

Best Countries Survey

More than 21,000 people throughout the world took part in the Best Countries survey, where they assessed how closely they associated 73 countries with specific characteristics, including:

  • Economically stable

  • Good job market

  • Income equality

  • Is a place I would live

Data from the World Bank and United Nations on migrant populations was also used to inform the ‘Best Countries to be an Immigrant’ rankings, along with immigration policy.

"While our methodology did not focus on refugees specifically, it did take into account immigration policies and integration measures per analysis from the United Nations," Deidre McPhillips, a data reporter for the rankings, told the Washington Post.

"Our aim with this package was to focus on the economic aspects of immigration and the impacts this could have on a country's perceived standing in the world."

According to the US News and World Report, the US dropped in the rankings due to its perceived economic inequality.

Australia ranked 5th best country overall

Australia ranked 5th overall in the Best Countries poll, which also assesses other factors such as quality of life, entrepreneurship, citizenship, cultural influence and adventure.
